SPONSOR  STREET CHILDREN

Living in extreme poverty

Guatemala City has about 17,581,472 million people (2019 UN data) and estimates show that at least 60% of them are poor. Those with the lowest incomes live in very precarious situations. 70% of the population lives on less than US$2 per day. In the countryside, 30% live on less than $1 per day.

The Caputo Children`s Fund is committed to help the poor and starving children especially the street children of Guatemala City. Members work in coordination with the Fund and extend their help worldwide.

Guatemalan street kids struggle to survive....

The thousands of street children who inhabit Guatemala City do what they can to scrape by -- begging, selling bananas for a few pennies, salvaging what they can from the garbage dump. Some join gangs and turn to crime. Most of them are homeless, sleeping on sidewalks or by an abandoned train station. To curb their desperation and hunger, many have become inhalant addicts, sniffing industrial solvents that almost certainly cause brain damage.

These children are shunned by society as they are in rags, filthy, infested and smell badly, they are very suspicious of everyone, having known only hard knocks, and cannot believe that anyone can give them unconditional love. They are afraid of the police and give false names if arrested.

Most importantly, the children on the streets remain deprived of their basic needs of food, shelter, clothing and the security of family love and a home. With no adult to care for them, these children have no role model for guidance, surviving and fending for themselves and coping with all the problems of the local community, way before they have developed the physical and emotional maturity this demands.

We live in a world of abundance, yet many people around the world are in desperate need. Poverty, death, disease, and disasters wreak chaos in the lives of millions. Most of times little children are the ones who suffer the most from these problems, and they are the ones most desperately in need of your help.

Millions of children suffer from lack of food, health care, neglect and abuse. Among all children, the children of Africa and the street children of Central America suffer most. But you don't have to stand by hopelessly while children are going hungry. The majority of them are homeless, sleeping on sidewalks or by an abandoned or uncompleted building. To reduce their desperation and hunger, many have become inhalant addicts, sniffing industrial solvents that almost certainly cause brain damage. Young girls, twelve or thirteen old, become prostitutes in order to obtain food.

Under Caputo Children´s Fund, through schools, orphanages and church-related programs, we touch the lives of children in Central America. We also provide assistance to orphanages, schools, and other charitable groups in these regions. It is eminent that people all across Africa are facing chronic food insecurity that in some cases has dragged on for several years. As people continue the struggle to grow and buy food, they find themselves stuck in a cycle of hunger that is slowly escalating downward.
